Total newbie and non cyclist who conquered her nerves to start training with Njinga. Catherine has made massive strides forward and recently got the courage to start riding outside.

Improved average power output by 27% over 16 weeks from attending the Pedal Power Improver class each week. Increased from 106 to 135 watts

Overcame her fears and learnt to ride in cleats in one session, before going on to complete her first outdoor ride with the Njinga Collective

Where my journey with Njinga began:

I was a very reluctant attendee to my first Njinga class. I had heard stories of how tough it was, but I was finally convinced to give it a go, and I’m so glad I did! I was worried the ‘cycling community’ would be very exclusive but this is definitely not the case with Njinga.

I have never been particularly sporty, always finding an excuse to skip PE at school. Holding the belief that I wasn’t any good, it was easier not to try. I knew I needed to improve my fitness levels and so tried a few exercise classes and even joined a gym, but nothing inspired me, and I lost interest after a few weeks.

However, Njinga has been a revelation!

It soon became addictive:

From the very beginning I was made to feel welcome, I wasn’t judged for not being in the peak of health and for the first time ever, I pushed myself to try harder than I have before. It is very addictive!! I started off with 1 or 2 sessions a week, and soon found myself missing it if I had to skip a class.

One of my goals is to lose some weight that has crept on over the years, and I am starting to see some changes - now I aim for 3 or 4 classes a week and am noticing the positive improvements to my overall health and fitness levels (and my clothes are starting to fit so much better).

Another goal conquered:

Another of my goals was to be able to ride outdoors. Joining the Collective and signing up to the Girona Trip seemed like great ideas, however I was severely lacking in confidence and even quite scared about the prospect of riding outside wearing cleats and within a group of other riders. So, I booked onto some 1-2-1 outdoor coaching sessions, one focusing on riding in cleats and one on basic bike handling skills. They were great! I learnt so much and came away feeling much more positive about my capabilities.

I have just returned from my very first Njinga Collective ride...and I am buzzing!! We rode 46km and I loved every minute!! It was a real challenge unlike anything I’ve done before and I can’t wait to do more. I am so pleased to have conquered some major self-doubts and I couldn’t have done it without the amazing coaching and support from the team at Njinga!

Riding with the Collective was such a massive confidence boost, that I signed up to my first sportive ride - The Tour de Yorkshire Ride (50km). I was very nervous as the day approached, but I am delighted to say that I made it round without stopping or needing to change a puncture! The hills were very tough, which I knew they would be, but I just kept thinking of all the training I had done in the lab.....this kept me going and I made it to the top each time. The scenery was amazing and the local support was so encouraging. The finish was an awesome experience, and I love my very first medal!!

Great Experience:

I have been coming to classes at Njinga for nearly a year and absolutely love it! I can’t wait to join in with more of the collective rides - it’s been a great experience so far. The whole team at Njinga are so welcoming, it is great to be part of a community where there is no judgement, just an eagerness to help and see everyone improve. Like I said, I love it!! #njingarocks
